The Katana gets an upgrade
The Katana 50 MKII has secured its place as one of Boss's most popular amplifier models thanks to its combination of a high level of sonic flexibility, an impressive range of effects, and volume reserves to cover a lot of different applications - all wrapped up in a combo that is easy to transport. Boss has now taken this successful model a step further by adding new features to create the Katana 50 MKII EX, which delivers the same high level of performance with enhanced flexibility. This updated version retains the connections for Boss's GA-FC and GA-FC EX floorboards and now includes a line output, which provides a mix-ready signal for sending to a PA system, and a "Stereo Expand" feature that allows players to connect a second Katana amp and thus expand their live setup.
Down to the last detail
On the surface, the Boss Katana 50 MKII EX is a typical 50-watt, 1x12" combo amp, but it packs far more features than players might expect - which can be accessed easily via the control panel on the top of the amp or via the Boss Tone Studio Editor, which is available free of charge at bosstonecentral.com and allows the user to customise their sounds down to the last detail. This last point of course also makes the Katana 50 MKII EX an ideal choice for recording applications, where the signal can be sent straight from the amp's integrated USB port or line output to the user's DAW. What is more, the Boss Katana 50 MKII EX is compatible with Boss's GA-FC and GA-FC EX floorboards, which provide access to up to eight presets and much more, thus ensuring that this amp will cut a great figure in the rehearsal room and on stage as well.
For players of all levels
Until fairly recently, players would have had to shell out considerably more for an amplifier with as much to offer as the Boss Katana 50 MKII EX - so while its size and price tag correspond more with those of an entry-level amplifier, its quality and features certainly don't. Or to put it another way, this amp's price and format are ideal for those just starting out on the guitar and in their first band, but it has the quality and versatility to go far beyond that and will also find favour among more advanced guitarists looking for an amplifier that will deliver top-quality sounds at low enough volume levels for practising at home (or who are quite simply sick of hauling heavy equipment to and from gigs and want a great-sounding amp that is lightweight yet still powerful enough to handle the live environment).
About Boss
The Boss brand has been an important part of the Japanese Roland Corporation since the mid-1970s and has caused a sensation from its inception, especially with its compact effect pedals but also multi-effect units and other helpful tools for guitarists. The company's single effect pedals in particular are legendary and can be found in almost every guitarist's home. An incredible 15 million have been sold to date. With its Katana series, the manufacturer now also offers excellent amplifiers at a very interesting price point.
Everyone's personalised amp
It is obvious that the Boss Katana 50 MKII EX has many advantages, but the biggest of these is that it allows every player to create precisely the sounds they are looking for - which after all is very high on any guitarist's list of requirements. After all, an amp with a huge wealth of options is not much good unless the player can operate it intuitively and customise the settings to produce a sound that they are truly happy with at the end of it. The Boss Katana 50 MKII EX ticks all of those boxes and lets the player quickly and easily find the right sounds to complement the instrument and the style that they are playing - whether they are looking for smooth, shimmering clean tones or full-on Metal distortion - and the basic sounds can be optimally enhanced with the amp's high-quality onboard effects. Unlocking the Katana's full range of functions will require one of the matching floorboards, so Thomann of course has a range of corresponding bundles on offer that are definitely worth a look!

GA-FC and GA-FC EX floorboards
Both the GA-FC and its "bigger brother" the GA-FC EX allow players to tap into the full range of functions that the Boss Katana 50 MKII EX has to offer. Both models feature a roadworthy metal chassis and sturdy metal footswitches, and in addition to the extensive access that both floorboards provide to the amp's wealth of options, the GA-FC EX also boasts extended connectivity, including two dedicated expression pedal jacks, a foot control jack, and an additional control jack with a three-way mode selector that provides the following options: "EXPAND" mode for adding another GA-FC EX or GA-FC floorboard, "FOOT CONTROL 2" mode for operating two amplifiers at once, and "EXP PEDAL 3" mode for adding a third expression pedal.
