I use the moongel to make cymbals sound drier
elnegros 21.01.2016
I started using this on cymbals to make them sound dry. It perfectly worked, and this is how I ended up using this product. Anywhere where I go, I carry a pair of DAMPER PADS in my stick bag.

I play a lot of jazz suff, it is crucial for me to be able to ride properly. When you go in Jam session, they often do not have good cymbal, always have those, thick, shiny and sustaining one, I use the moongel to mute the sound and have it dried. Easy to put, easy to remove

For this purpose I give this product 5 star *****
PS: this get easily lost, make sure you remove them after your gig.

ONE LAST THING, AVOID LEAVING THE PADS EXPOSED TO HIGH TEMPERATURES, IT WILL MELT AND YOU WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO REUSE THEM. KEEP THEM IN A DRY AND COOL PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A
Effortless drum sound improvement
Anonymous 12.02.2016
The best thing of course is to make sure the drum kit is properly tuned before recording.... these little gel beauties will make the kit sound even better by getting rid of excessive ringing and harmonics. You can alter how much damping they provide by a) cutting the gel pads into smaller pieces and b) trying out where you place them on your toms/snare. The placement and size of the moon gel definitely yielded noticeable differences in sound. I have only used them once so far for a live band recording. The drummer showed up with his kit 15 mins before we were due to start, and as we were filming a live video we were on a tight schedule as the video guys were about to turn up.

Im not sure if the drummers kit was in tune, as i was so eager to get a sound check in i didnt even pay attention to that....we didnt have time for a tune up anyway. What i did do was get him to soundcheck the snare and toms one by one, and as he was doing so i was slapping on the moon gel, trying out some different positions and other than hearing the improvement for myself, the other band members looked shocked and impressed at the great difference a tiny bit of gel can make! (I cut the original pads into halves and used one half on each tom and the snare). I will probably try larger pieces or alternative placements on the snare in the future as it still had a bit too much ring for my liking... was perfectly adequate for our requirements in the given session. These pads are so well priced I would recommend them for any studio or live application!

P
Absolutely great product
Pcpdrummer 30.12.2019
I have been using RTOM Moongel damper pads since 2010. in live and studio environment and I must say than moongel pads always delivered.
I have used them on my snare and on my toms and have always achieved great results. The way moongels dampen the overtones without killing all the right frequencies is amazing.
I live in Belgrade/Serbia and this products is difficult to find in our music stores so I`ve been forced to try and find many similar alternative products and, none of them came even close. E
I even tried cheap "ALIEXPRESS version" of similar product and either they are to sticky and kill the sound of the drum completely or they can be used only once and then they come off and are useless
PROS:
- Can be used for a long period time if washed with soap and stored correctly, they remain sticky for a long time, they provide the right amount of damping/overtone ratio, easy to carry around with you, they come with a little box and fit in a pocket...overall great and very affordable product and its in a "every drummer must have" category
CONS:
None ...other that they are easy to get lost so I suggest buying several packs just in case :)

I have used moon gel for many of years and refresh it on my kits every few months. Helps to reduce the resonance in the live sound and gives the drums that dry studio sound I’m looking for

Live and Studio life-saver

I bought these pads to handle troublesome rings on the drum kits I deal with both on stage and in the studio, and I've been amazed by their effectiveness and ease of use: just stick them near the drum bolts and you're done. You could apply one or more dampers in different position over the drum head or even stack them on one another if you just want to maximize their performance on a single spot. I even cut one of them in half to reduce the dampening. The material is so easy to work with and you can wash it to cleanse it from dust and wood chippings and reuse them virtually any number of times.

PROs:
- They do what they're supposed to, and they do it remarkably well!
- You can apply them in every fashion you can think of to achieve different damping results, and even reshape them by cutting the damper with a common pair of scissors

CONs:
- They tend to stick to each other when stored in their container, I recommend using some kind of paper divider between the pads to avoid it, because tearing each other off every time can cause them to rip, in the long run

m
easy damping
matt121 21.12.2020
moongel offers an easy damping method, mess-free compared to using gaffa-tape for example. After time it starts to melt however, and becomes hard to remove, also leaves a stain on your drum head permanently if its coated.
I wouldnt put it on my cymbals as i fear of discoloration. also a bit overpriced if you ask me, but all in all probably the best method for non-permanent damping.

Good to have it in your bag.
bantha 22.08.2017
I'm playing stoner, sludge, death and doom metal mostly on deep old school drums and sometimes need some extra control of sound. Mostly in studio but also when I'm using not mine drum sets live.

High range of use depends where and how many you will put it on the heads. I'm using them mostly on my 14x8" snare, 2 pieces both sides at the edge to control sustain and overtones. On toms and floor toms only one works fine. Best choice if you will play other drums on gigs and don't have enough time to tune them for your applications - sometimes it's only hope to reach Dark side of the Force. You can even use it with cymbals for drier sound. It's better than adhesive tape and don't left glue traces.

Their biggest flaw is poor resistance for temperatures when you playing outside and left it on the sun. It will melt and you will not be able to use them in correct way.

The greatest advantage it that you don't need it all the time but it's good to have it in your bag.

Need 2 packs
Reminiscence 16.04.2020
For very ringy drums, you'll need a lot of those.
Say you have three toms and one snare.
You need at least two for your snare.
Then two for your floor tom. Maybe three.
You've only got one left each for your two remaining toms.

I would suggest stronger dampening systems, or buying at least two packs of those. I've used tape with those and tape works better but is more messy to take away.

Next time, I will get drum dampening rings. You can put them in a bag with your other drums and from experience, they're more radical and easier to remove than tape.
