Hm, it's a ribbon that doesn't sound like a ribbon...
Edgar Blackdagger 01.11.2021
So I first got an sE X1-R, which I instantly loved, but it does need a lot of Treble EQ for vocals, so I thought the Voodoo would be perfect because of its extended hi-end.
The specs say it goes up to 18kHz, but testing it I found it goes above 20kHz.
So, turns out a ribbon with extended hi-end sounds like a condenser mic set on figure-8, with all the ribbon quirks (storing them vertically, low sensitivity and moody behavior with preamps), without the silky smooth EQ-able highs (and generally its freq response was spikier and harder to EQ).

I personally love ribbons because of their slow speed, natural, yet easily EQ-able freq response, 3-D sound and their ability to take saturation like no other type of mic and this one didn't have any of these characteristics neither on vocals, electric guitars nor drums.

If you want a clinical, pristine and clean ribbon, the Voodoo is a great choice, it's definitely extremely well-made too, it's just that it doesn't really have the character typically associated with a ribbon mic.

This mic has clean high end, smooth lows, perfectly balanced. Very bright for a ribbon, gives it all it's charm.
Not too noisy for a ribbon mic, love it on vocals and guitars.
Affordable and robust.

Great for recording whistles, mandolin and guitar
Davor_Zerjav 09.03.2024
Very nice mic, I like the tone. I'm using it with Triton FetHead preamp attached to mic because signal from this mic is pretty low. With Triton It's great and clean. You get very nice sound if you are recording acoustic guitar, mandolin and Irish whistle (this is what I'm using mic for). With whistle you have to be careful not to blow air from whistle directly to mic to not damage ribbon or to get distorted sound. Built quality is superb. With mic, you get very nice and convinient shock mount and wooden case, but my mic is always on stand and ready for use. I only cover it with dust cover when I dont work with it.

Great mic on guitar cabs
feudebois 02.05.2017
In use primarily on guitar cabs bringing studio sound to stages, it's smooth sounding and tour grade rugged for situations i thought I'd never be using a ribbon.
Great addition to any mic collection.

M
Amazing ribbon mic
MrTesla 02.05.2019
I bought the VR1 to primarily use on my saxophone, however ever since I bought it I find myself using it on sources like overheads, vocals, guitar amps etc. This mic can take pretty much anything. It has a pleasing bass roll-off that I find useful and it doesn't thin the mic out. Really good mic for the price, isn't very gain hungry. If my Steinberg UR 242 can drive the mic without an issue, I doubt anything else will have a problem.

As a figure of eight for mid side recording
zzzzzzz 15.05.2020
As a figure of eight for mid side recording as a side mic is not suitable. The signal is too weak and so left much noise.

VR1 Voodo band mic
MR.DK 27.02.2024
I record guitar cabinets with this Microphone and a cloud filter. I have 2 albums selling on the internet and lots of guitar players always ask how I get that sound. It’s a great mid range band microphone!
