Distortion / Waveshaper

The A-136 is a distortion and wavehaping module with extensive adjustment parameters. The input signal (audio- or control voltage), is first divided inside the module into 3 separate signal paths, which are mixed together at the output with adjustable gain (positive / negative):

By way of all the various possible settings of the 5 parameters, very complex waveform distortions and modifications (waveshaping) are possible. The changes range from simple hard- or soft-clipping, to completely changed waveforms, in which the original input signal can no longer be recognised.

  • Positive component of the signal with adjustable clipping threshold (also externally); and gain / roll-off (+/-)
  • Negative component of the signal with adjustable clipping threshold (also externally); and gain / roll-off (+/-)
  • Original signal with adjustable gain / roll-off (+/-)
  • Inputs: Audio / CV In, ext. Clipping Level (+), ext. Clipping Level (-)
  • Outputs: Audio / CV Out
  • Application examples: Audio distortion (can get especially interesting in conjunction with filters), waveform manipulation for audio- and control signals (LFO, ADSR, random, etc.).
  • Width: 8 HP
  • Depth: 45 mm
  • Power requirement: +30 mA (+12V) / -10mA (-12V)

Capable Waveshaping

As with all Doepfer products, the a136 is powerful, inexpensive and logically laid out. It requires careful gainstaging to coax the best performance from it so be warned you'll be spending some time initially finding the sweet spots - but they are there, rest assured. I often use the a136 on my stand alone synths also, as well as my eurorack only sound design, with great results. Just remember your gainstaging and you'll love it.

It need some practice

It's a really good hard clipper and it works well as a waveshaper. However it takes a bit of time to understand how to get the most out of it. I'm still learning....

Less Distortion, More Added Beef
LiamJ 10.10.2015
I found this to add less distortion and more of a general fuzz/amp module giving the sound a bit louder/thicker sound than the perceived distortion that you would achieve, but as always, great build quality and a lovely module to add to the collection, great for beefing up bass lines created on a modular.

A-136

Iv had this for while now, and it always amaze me how nice it can sound on drums or base lines. I find my self using it on LFOs as well with great effect. Plus the price of the unit is good for what it offers. If your looking for wave shaper then you can't go wrong with A-136
